Questions from the CAVW Red Carpet!

If you could wake up tomorrow and have gained one quality or ability, what would it be?

"Like a super power? I think teleportation would be awfully convenient. I'd cut down my airport time immensely. That's almost boring though... actually, I really like about Black Widow that she really doesn't have any super powers, she just has years of training and stellar abilities. I'd rather just be a natural badass than a superhero."
This is your second big franchise. Do you have any fun memories from your first, Pirates of the Caribbean?
"I have so many fun memories from that set. That was my first film, and to be so young and surrounded by this enormous crew on this just huge production, I never could have imagined it. But we had a great time. Why wouldn't we? We got to spend some weeks in the Bahamas, out in the sun. It was beautiful. I feel like telling any specific stories would betray the code, so I can't, but suffice it to say we had a fantastic time."

On defining moments: "I've had a number, I feel like. I think a lot of people would expect me to say when I landed the Pirate movies, and that was of course, but I think it was even more of a big moment when I stopped doing them. To be so young and recognized so specifically for one role, to step back and say, 'Actually, I think I'm finished with this, I want to do something else' was huge. And honestly could have been so daft, but it worked out. Luckily! For me, I feel like that was a moment when I fully realized it was alright to do what it was I wanted, and not just what other's wanted for me."

On changing the field of acting: "Listen, I'm lucky. I'm a white woman who is at least mildly attractive so it feels a bit awful to complain, but if there's any chance of being heard, I feel like I might as well take it. It's astounding to me that the industry is still so close-minded. To say a woman or a person of color or someone who isn't strictly heterosexual can't lead a film because people won't see it is absolutely baffling. That we even have to have a discussion about equal pay is honestly gross. It would be wonderful if there was a Black Widow movie, I'm still pushing for that, but like I said, I'm in a good position. But I hate that not everyone can say that. I wish there was more diversity, not just in roles but also among writers and directors and producers. That's what makes life wonderful, why wouldn't we want our entertainment to be just as vibrant?"

On public persona: "I'm very much just me, all the time. And that's not to say I don't put a lot of stock or thought into what others think or say about me, but that doesn't change what I say or do. If I want to go somewhere with someone, I'm going to do it. If someone has a problem with that, that's more their problem than mine. I think my family is fairly used to it. My mum still calls in a second of panic every now and then about something that's caught her eye in the papers or something but for the most part it's more to shrug and say, 'ah, that's Very, at it again.' I've always been headstrong, that hasn't changed a bit."
